Start with three clearly labelled inputs

The trip fuel-cost calculator needs distance in kilometres, consumption in litres per 100 kilometres and fuel price in Canadian dollars per litre. Keep those units intact: a consumption figure in L/100 km is not kilometres per litre, and C$1.60/L is not 1.60 cents/L.

Use the distance for the movement you want to budget. If your question is the fuel expense of a round trip, include the relevant return distance. If you enter only a loaded outbound leg, the result describes only that leg.

Choose a consumption assumption you can explain. A planning estimate based on your own records may be more useful for your operation than an unrelated example. The starting values in this tool demonstrate the arithmetic; they are not a vehicle benchmark or a current market price.

500 kilometres, one fuel estimate

Hypothetical trip

Distance: 500 km. Consumption: 30 L/100 km. Price: C$1.60/L, on your chosen consistent tax basis.

Estimated volume = 500 × 30 ÷ 100 = 150 L. Estimated fuel spend = 150 × C$1.60 = C$240. Modeled fuel cost per kilometre = 30 × C$1.60 ÷ 100 = C$0.48/km.

Cross-check the result: C$0.48/km × 500 km = C$240. The units lead back to the same trip expense.

The per-km result comes directly from consumption and price. Distance scales the estimated litres and total spend, but does not change the per-km figure when the other two assumptions are held constant.

Test a range you can justify

Change one assumption at a time so you can see what moved the answer. At 35 L/100 km over the same 500 km and C$1.60/L, estimated volume becomes 175 L and fuel spend C$280. The change in consumption adds C$40 in this hypothetical comparison.

Keeping consumption at 30 L/100 km but changing the price to C$1.70/L produces C$255 of fuel spend. That C$15 increase is the 150 L volume multiplied by the C$0.10/L price difference.

These are sensitivity checks, not forecasts. Use values suited to the decision and record why you chose them. A single consumption input does not separately calculate idle time, auxiliary equipment, terrain, load or weather.

Understand zero and missing inputs

At zero distance the model returns zero litres and zero trip spend. It still shows the modeled fuel cost per kilometre from your consumption and price inputs. That is a scenario rate, not a measured average for a trip that did not move.

A blank field has a different meaning: the assumption is missing. The tool hides the result until you supply a value. Zero consumption or a zero price is accepted as an explicit scenario, but should not be mistaken for a normal operating assumption.

Fuel expense is one piece of trip cost

The estimate excludes labour, maintenance, insurance, equipment costs, overhead and other trip expenses. It is not a customer quote or full profitability calculation. If you move the fuel number into a broader cost model, confirm that fuel has not already been included elsewhere.

Keep the price's tax basis visible when exporting or comparing the result. This tool does not determine which taxes apply or which amounts are recoverable. It simply uses the price you supply.
