Detroit engines
Detroit’s DD range spans medium-duty and heavy-duty diesel engines. Generation matters: Detroit describes Gen 6 DD13 and DD15 production for January 2027, with DD16 changes following in 2028. Those announced specifications should not be applied to every engine already in service. Use the engine serial number and model-year documentation to identify a truck before comparing ratings, maintenance requirements or operating records.

DD13
Heavy-duty regional and vocational dieselThe DD13 is Detroit’s smaller heavy-duty DD-family engine, positioned for regional and vocational work. Detroit describes a 12.8 L Gen 6 version with production planned for January 2027. An existing DD13 may be an earlier generation with different specifications.
DD15
Heavy-duty highway dieselDetroit positions the DD15 as a large-displacement engine for higher-distance work. Its announced Gen 6 specification lists 14.8 L displacement, with production planned for January 2027. DD15 engines already in service can belong to earlier generations and require their own documentation.
DD16
Heavy-haul diesel familyDD16 is Detroit’s largest DD-family heavy-duty engine in this directory. The manufacturer associates it with demanding hauling and separately describes Gen 6 changes planned for 2028. Treat current installed engines and announced future specifications as different reference points.
DD5
Four-cylinder medium-duty dieselDetroit identifies the DD5 as a 5.1 L four-cylinder diesel engine. Its product page lists a 200–240 hp range and short-haul pickup-and-delivery applications. These details distinguish it from the larger DD8 and heavy-duty DD13–DD16 families.
DD8
Medium-duty diesel familyDetroit’s DD8 is a 7.7 L medium-duty diesel engine. It occupies a different place in the range from the four-cylinder DD5 and the heavy-duty DD13. Identify the truck-specific rating and generation before using a specification found in a general product comparison.
