Volvo engines
Volvo’s North American diesel engines should be identified by generation and application, not only by D11 or D13. European and other regional Volvo specifications can differ. The body-builder and powertrain references linked here help establish the correct starting point; the individual engine’s identification and truck records remain necessary for ratings, parts and service planning. Consider the engine and I-Shift or other installed transmission as a complete powertrain.
Compare the model families
| Model / family | Application | Overview | Model notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| D11 | North American diesel family | D11 is a Volvo diesel engine designation documented in Volvo’s North American body-builder material alongside D13. This profile refers to that truck application. Specifications for a European Volvo D11 or another vehicle type should not be substituted for the North American engine’s records. | Read the profile → |
| D13 | North American heavy-duty diesel | D13 is Volvo’s North American heavy-duty diesel family. The current VNL specification combines D13 with I-Shift and describes different torque packages. The D13 name also appears on older trucks, so the current VNL package should not be assumed to describe every D13 in service. | Read the profile → |
