What is the Volvo D13?
D13 is Volvo’s North American heavy-duty diesel family. The current VNL specification combines D13 with I-Shift and describes different torque packages. The D13 name also appears on older trucks, so the current VNL package should not be assumed to describe every D13 in service.
What matters in a comparison
When comparing D13 vehicles, identify the generation and whether the cited torque package belongs to that truck. Look at transmission and rear-axle specification together with the engine. Compare fuel history at similar operating weights and on suitable routes. If a listing only supplies an engine name, obtain the build information before using a brochure’s highest rating in your evaluation.

Engine oil — 2010–2020
2017–2020: VDS-4.5 / API CK-4. For 2010–2016, VDS-4.5 / CK-4 is recommended; VDS-4.0 / CJ-4 is the listed minimum.
Use the model-year table and approved viscosity chart. These earlier engines are not assigned the later VDS-5.0 requirement.

Genuine VCS2, a phosphate organic acid technology (POAT) coolant.
The manufacturer records a factory change effective 24 August 2023. Use the expansion-tank decal to identify VCS2; do not select by coolant colour alone. Changing from VCS requires the specified complete purge/rinse procedure.

What still needs unit-specific confirmation
- Confirm current part supersessions and vehicle-specific fitment through the OEM before ordering. Quantities, capacities and maintenance intervals require the serial-specific manual.
- The OEM manual says model-year 2020 VGT and model-year 2021 turbocompound D13 engines omit the bypass oil filter. Do not order a generic three-oil-filter kit by family name.
