How to compare transmissions
Manual, AMT or automatic
An automated manual (AMT) controls shifting and clutch operation automatically. It is a different architecture from a torque-converter automatic. A used advert that only says “automatic” needs a more precise identification.
Look beyond the gear count
Record direct drive or overdrive, axle ratio and tyre size when comparing a powertrain. For vocational work, identify the exact PTO provisions and approved application. A larger number of gears does not alone make a truck suitable for a heavier job.
Keep the suffix
HD, Pro and other suffixes can change application scope, ratings and equipment. Replacement and rebuild records should identify the actual unit. These profiles are reference guides, not shifting, recovery or conversion instructions.
